Sermon Set Up- Read Joshua 1:1-6

  • Imagine being Joshua at this moment. Moses—the leader you have followed for decades—is dead, and now God says, essentially, It’s your turn. What emotions or fears do you think Joshua may have been carrying?

  • God repeatedly grounds Joshua’s courage in what God has already promised to do. What does that teach us about the difference between biblical courage and simply trying to be brave?

  • The generation before Joshua had also stood at the edge of the Promised Land, but fear kept them from trusting God. Why are fear and unbelief so easy to repeat from one generation to another?

Going Deeper

  • What fears, attitudes, habits, or ways of responding to difficulty have you learned from the people who came before you? Which have been worth keeping and which has God had to help you unlearn?

  • Israel had plenty of evidence that God was faithful, yet they still struggled to trust Him. Why can remembering God’s faithfulness yesterday still be difficult when we are facing something frightening today?

  • Finish this sentence as honestly as you can: “I find it hardest to trust God when ______.” What makes that particular area difficult for you?

  • The message defines resilience as “unshakable confidence in God’s power and purposes.” How is that different from pretending everything is okay or simply pushing through something hard?

  • What would “strong and courageous” actually look like in your life this week—not as a slogan, but as a specific act of trust or obedience?

  • God tells Joshua, “I will be with you. I will not leave you or abandon you.” Where do you especially need to remember that promise right now?
