Sermon Discussion - Matthew 4:1-11
- Most heroes of the faith underwent some form of spiritual testing. How do you feel towards God knowing that he may require spiritual testing in your life?
- God brought Jesus into the testing, led and accompanied by the Holy Spirit:
- Does this give you comfort and hope? Why or why not?
- What does this tell you about how God will meet us in times of temptation?
- Reflect on the statement: "We either rely on God or we don’t."
- Can’t we both rely on ourselves and God? Why or why not?
- What lies do we believe to convince ourselves that it's okay to rely on both?
- Discuss the counterfeit beliefs mentioned, such as "What God wants is for me to be happy.” And “God helps those who help themselves."
- What is the sliver of truth in those statements?
- How do these counterfeits differ from biblical truths, and why is it important to discern between them?
- If self-sufficiency is the enemy of God-dependency…
- In what areas of your life do you struggle to fully depend on God, opting for self-sufficiency instead?
- How can reliance on Christ shift that dependency?
Pray for each other based on what was shared in the last questions discussion.
