Announcements
One of the big Thanksgiving events we do on Sunday mornings is our KidStuf breakfast that takes place in the KidStuf Theater on Sunday, November 28th during the 1st service. Lisa is looking to see if a few Grow Groups would be willing to volunteer to service the families and help this a great event to love on our children and their parents. Can you please share this with your group and discuss maybe helping service at this event, especially if you are in the stage of life of “before” or “after” kids.Conversation Starter
If you have ever read or studied the book of John, what is your favorite thing about this Gospel? What excites you most about starting this new series?Sermon Based Questions
Before you get into chapter 1 read John 20:30-31. John says he wrote this so that we might Believe.- David shared that we are not asked to have “Blind Faith”. Why do you agree or disagree with this statement?
- How do the “signs” speak to this tension of the kind of faith we are to have?
Read John 1:1-18
Often we think of Jesus as not showing up until the New Testament. Look at John 1:3, 1 Cor 8:6, Colossians, 1:16-17.
- Were you surprised to see that Jesus created everything? For some, this may be the first time that connection is made.
- What does this tell us about Jesus?
- Why is this truth so important to know and believe?
Thinking about John 1:1-5: Many people in the church could hear these verses and think “nothing new here” and miss how big of a deal this really is.
- How should this change how you or I live for God, not just what we say we believe about God?
Look back at John 1:14-17
Pastor David talked about “Grace” as “God offering a life with Him that we don’t deserve”, and “Truth” as “the call to live in the light of Jesus and reject darkness (sin)”.
- How did Jesus reflect both grace and truth in his ministry?
- What does it mean to know that we can’t experience God’s grace and truth without having both, knowing we can’t experience one without the other?
- How did these attributes of Jesus impact how you were able to experience him as your savior?
- How does this impact how you show Jesus to others?
Going Deeper
Pastor David closed asking these questions, discuss them as a group:- Is he truly God in your life above all things? What area do you struggle to let him be God? (Check out Matthew 16:24, Matthew 7:21)
- Do you need to be reminded that you are his creation wonderfully made by him? What does this tell you about your relationship with him? (Psalm 139:14, Colossians 1:16, Romans 11:36)
- Are you living IN that life and light or is there some darkness (sin) that you might be holding onto in life right now? (1 John 3:4-9, Romans 8:7, Galatians 5:16-18)
