Conversation Starter
- Where is the darkest place you have ever been? (or) When you were a child were you afraid of the dark and why?
Sermon Discussion “The Story”: Read John 8:1-12
- What do you love about this story and why?
- How do you see yourself in the woman who was brought before Jesus?
- Go back to Verse 11, Jesus’ closing worlds: Pastor David said that this was a call from Jesus to “Live a Life of Repentance”.
- Do you see that here? Why or why not?
- Based on Sunday how might you define living a life of repentance?
- Look at John 8:11 and 12 and Romans 8:1, 12-13 to help answer this question.
- Pastor David Challenged us to live a life of Repentance: When you see your sin what is your first response: Justify the reason for sin or repent and turn from that sin? How do we move from one to the other?
- Was there anything from Pastor David’s sermon that really stuck out to you, made you question, or that you would like to discuss further?
Going Deeper/Application “The Teaching”: Read John 8:12-30
- Pastor David said that we often hear this statement “Only God can judge me”
- How is this true and not true? (Look up John 5:26-27, 1 Corinthians 5:11-13, Matthew 7:5)
- What do we learn from this story about how Jesus looks at our sin?
- Pastor David Said Jesus is judging today differently than the future. Agree or not? Why?
- How is this true and not true? (Look up John 5:26-27, 1 Corinthians 5:11-13, Matthew 7:5)
- How do we model what Jesus did in this story to each other in our church today when we see someone trapped in sin?
- Read John 8:19: The Pharisees thought they “knew” God through their study of the Bible, Jesus said they don’t know God or Jesus.
- How are we sometimes like the Pharisees? What keeps us from that place (Hint: This is a “head” versus “heart” question)
Final Challenge:
- Pastor David Challenged us to live a life of Repentance: When you see your sin what is your first instinctive response, justify the reason for sin or repent and turn from that sin? How do we move from one to the other?
Challenge/Prayer Time: This week is a good time to split up into gender groups for prayer.
- Are there any areas of your life that you are struggling to live a life of repentance in? How can we pray and walk that with you to live a life of repentance?
