Grow Group Questions - September 29, 2024
Announcement:

In your group resources, you’ll find our Grow Group Commitment along with helpful guidelines for navigating political conversations. If your group didn’t review these last week, please take time to do so this week.

Icebreaker:

Looking back on your childhood, what was the most important rule in your home, and why do you think it mattered so much? If you think you have time, also share the rule you disliked the most.

Sermon Discussion - Read Exodus 20:1-6

  • Why does God remind the Israelites who He is in verse 2, even after all the miracles they’ve seen?
    • What does this show about their relationship with Him?
  • Look at Exodus 20:4-5. How does making an image of God reduce our understanding of who He really is?
    • What is the danger of making God smaller and more manageable in our lives?
    • How might this contribute to a state of “restlessness” instead of rest?

Going Deeper

  • What are some “other gods” in our lives (like idols, priorities, or distractions) that compete with God for our attention and obedience?
    • What does this command reveal about God being "jealous"? How can we make sense of this in light of His love and mercy?
  • Why is it important to follow God’s instructions His way instead of on our terms?
    • How does your obedience to God’s way reflect your view of His Holiness?

Next Steps

  • In what areas of your life do you find yourself compromising God’s holiness by thinking, “Close is good enough”?
    • How can you shift your mindset to honor God more fully?
