Icebreaker: What is something you own or have access to but rarely actually use?

Looking at the Passage

  • Read Joshua 1:7–9. What words, commands, or ideas are repeated?

  • According to these verses, where was Joshua’s strength and courage supposed to come from?

  • Why does God connect being strong and courageous with knowing His Word and obeying it?

Going Deeper

  • God had already given Israel the land, yet they still had to step forward and take possession of it. What does that teach us about the relationship between God’s grace and our obedience?

  • In verse 8, God tells Joshua to meditate on his instruction “day and night.” How would continually filling his mind with God’s Word better prepare him for what was ahead?

    • What is the thing you are most filling your mind with right now? How is that shaping the way you respond to fear, uncertainty, or difficult circumstances?

  • “Prosper and succeed” can easily sound like a promise that following God will make life comfortable. How does the context of Joshua challenge that idea?

    • What would it look like in your own life to define “success” as faithfulness to God? Is our own faithfulness somehow “measurable”?

  • Why do you think fear and discouragement can sometimes lead us away from obedience?

  • Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh had already received their inheritance. Why do you think God still required them to fight alongside the other tribes until everyone had received rest?

  • Where are you trying to manufacture strength in yourself instead of depending on God’s promise and presence?
