Ice Breaker: What is one time in your life when someone corrected you with humility and love — and it actually drew you closer to them?

The Sermon - Read Aloud Matthew 7:1-12
  • Why do you think “Judge not” is one of the most quoted verses in culture — even among people who don’t follow Jesus?
  • Jesus uses hyperbole, or extreme overstatement, to make his point with the splinter/speck, beam/log. Can you name some other examples where Jesus uses hyperbole while teaching?
        • What does Jesus reveal about the heart behind condemnation vs. the heart behind lovingly helping someone with a “speck”?
  • Why is it harmful for Christians to judge non-Christians by Christian standards?
        • How does Paul address this directly in 1 Cor. 5:9–13?
  • Why is loving evaluation of other’s lives essential for spiritual growth and community?
        • What makes it so challenging to speak truth into someone else’s life?
  • What makes it hard for you personally to receive someone speaking truth into your life?
Going Deeper - Application

  • Is there anyone in your life who has permission to evaluate your behavior spiritually? Who is that person?
  • Where are you most tempted to hold someone to a standard you don’t meet yourself?
  • Is there someone you sense God calling you to lovingly approach — but with humility, patience, and relationship first?
  • What is one plank you need to ask God to begin removing from your own eye this week so you can love others well?
