Grow Group Questions - January 11, 2026

Announcement: We have upcoming men's and women’s events (retreats, conferences, Bible Studies). Check out the events page on the Bethany Website and see what you might go to together!

Prayer Prompts For Group:
P-Praise God for remembering His covenant and keep His promises
R-Repent For reading Scripture at “surface level” instead of digging deeper
A-Ask God to use your life, like John’s, to point people clearly toward Jesus
Y-Yield and surrender our plans and expectations to God for his purpose in your life over yours.

Ice Breaker:  If you could stand in front of any famous work of art (painting, sculpture, etc.), which one would you choose — and why?

The Sermon -  Read Aloud Luke 1:67-79

The message reminded us that Scripture uses “iconography” - images that point to a deeper truth

  • What images do you see in this prayer (horn, light, dawn, peace, etc.)?

  •  What do they communicate about God?

When Zechariah prays over John, he prays God’s purpose over his child.

  • What does this teach us about praying for the people we love?

    Going Deeper - Application

    • “The power in Zechariah’s prayer is not the declaration — it’s in the Truth.”

      • How comfortable are you with praying Scripture?

      • What keeps you from praying scripture?

John the Baptist’s role was simple but costly: point people to Christ.

      • What might it look like for you to point people toward Jesus?

      • Where might your prayers be shaped more by “human concerns” than “God’s concerns”? What would it look like to begin praying God’s purposes instead?

Prayer from the Sermon (From Saint Patrick’s Breastplate):
I give this day, to you Heavenly Father, Christ be with me, Christ go before me; Christ stand behind me, Christ be in me; Christ beneath me, Christ above me; Christ on my right, Christ on my left; Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. Let me walk in Your Strength and not My own, Amen.
