For this week's group prayer time, consider the “Praise Only” Prayer guide. Using Psalms 145, focus on praising God for how the Psalm communicates God's generosity toward us.
NEXT Discussion Questions:Leaders, please take some time to discuss NEXT with your group. As our church steps into the NEXT season, generosity is being invited and stretched.
- What excites you about that?
- What challenges you or makes you uncomfortable?
- As we approach Commitment Sunday, how can you prepare your heart to respond out of faith and intimacy with God rather than pressure or guilt?
Ice Breaker: In your family, upbringing, or church background, was generosity something that was talked about, modeled quietly, or not discussed much at all?
Going Deeper in The Sermon - Read Aloud Matthew 6:5-18
- What are the implications of Jesus saying “whenever you give” instead of “if you give?”
- What do you think that “reward” refers to? Why might Jesus not explain it in detail?
- How can you tell the difference in your own life between healthy encouragement and seeking applause?
- The message said: “We often let math drive giving instead of the Holy Spirit.”
- What does it look like to invite the Holy Spirit into decisions around generosity?
- How do we guard against giving that it is only done to feel more spiritual?
Application:
- Is there a specific way that God calling you to step out in faith to practice generosity in your finances? (Ex: Begin giving initially, changing how you give, re-evaluate what “enough” looks like? etc.)
